Your Sacrifices Matter

Employees’ psychological attachment to their organization remains an important topic of inquiry for organizations concerned about improving their talent management practices to retain valuable human capital. Self-sacrifice is regarded as an essential part of the human moral structure and is generally viewed as one of the most important behaviours of great leaders. Self-sacrificial leaders have a strong sense of duty to make sure their obligation to the group is satisfied, and that ultimately their goals for the group are achieved. They are likely to be concerned with the needs of followers and ensure that employees have a clear idea of their mission and purpose. This explains why employees may remain with an organization and high levels of job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and job involvement.

What is our vision of success for our life? What trade-offs that we are to make in the pursuit of that vision of success? Career goals often go hand-in-hand with harmful sacrifices. Sacrifice on the job can take many shapes. Our culture tends to define success very much in the terms of money, power, glory, or fame. We worked hard to pursue career goals but there are some trade-offs to success that continue to focus on performance at the highest levels in order to complete the purpose of an organization.

What Would You Sacrifice?

1. Time

Time management is crucial. Ever felt like a day is not enough to get through with everything you need to do? If you have, you should know that it is not about using all the time but using it correctly to get the best out of it. We all have the same 24 hours, and we all have the opportunity to use our time wisely. When we sacrifice time, we are prioritizing a certain task over another one. That task and all the others we accomplish – are the key to our success. Individuals in demanding careers chose to sacrifice time at home to fulfill work requirements, reflecting a clash between family and employment responsibilities.

2. Sleep

Sometimes, no matter how productive you are during the day, you need those extra hours at night. Without those extra periods of peace and quiet, you may not be able to get everything done. The rewarding feeling they get when they have accomplished their task always makes the reduced amount of sleep worth it for those wanting to achieve success. Work-life trade-offs point to a variety of activities that individuals sacrifice in the pursuit of work goals—sleep, exercise, housework, caring for others, leisure, and relaxation.

3. Personal Life

The tough balance between life and business will always be present. When you're feeling stretched between business and life, the best thing to ask yourself is which one is going to be a value add for you, at this moment. In other words, ask yourself 'If I missed this opportunity in life to focus on my business, would I be truly disappointed?' If the answer is not a strong 'yes,' it's okay to focus on your business.

4. Quiet Times

Busyness can keep you away from peace and you might feel your life is a bit hectic. But then again, successful people know that it’s not a condition that will last forever. As well as you are aware that at the moment you don’t have those minutes to take a breath and slow down, you have to be aware as well that’s temporary and once you have achieved your goals you will have plenty of time to sit back and relax.
